Peonies are real royal flowers because they have amazing beauty and incredible aroma. There are many varieties, among them yellow peonies occupy a special position. They were brought out by a breeder from Japan in 1958. He crossed 2 types of plants - tree and milk-flowered.

Choosing a place to plant a yellow peony

Before planting flowers, you need to prepare the soil. The result largely depends on compliance with the rules of agricultural technology, taking into account the characteristics of this variety. Recommendations for choosing a site:

  • Yellow peonies are planted on slightly acidic or neutral soil.
  • The peony is a light-loving plant, but it will not tolerate sunlight for a long time. The plant needs partial shade. It is not recommended to plant in a highly shaded area - this will negatively affect flowering. The inflorescence will break, stop blooming, or stretch out.
  • They are looking for a place that will protect the bushes from winds and drafts.
  • The flower bed should be in a well-ventilated place to avoid stagnant air, otherwise fungus will appear. Do not plant peonies surrounded by walls that obstruct air circulation.
  • The landing site should not be near buildings. Heat reflected from them can destroy the plant.
  • Cannot be planted near trees or tall shrubs. Neighbors may not leave moisture to the peonies.
  • Loamy soil is chosen from a mixture of sand, clay, and other impurities.
  • If groundwater passes close to the surface of the earth, do not plant the plant in that place.

It is better to plant flowers in a clearing in the central part of the garden - trees will not interfere with them, there will be no drafts and winds.

Yellow peonies

Important: you need to plant a culture at least one and a half meters from premises, buildings, tall bushes.

Preparing the soil for planting

It is necessary to plant, transplant flowers in the fall, since the culture does not react well to spring planting - it may not bloom for a long time or disappears. Saplings are recommended to be planted on a hill or in high flower beds. So excess water will quickly go away, the roots will not rot. If the soil is wet, drainage is done: the pit is deepened by 15 cm, the additional space is filled with gravel, brick.

Peony transplant

They dig a hole 60 centimeters deep and 70 cm in diameter - this contributes to good root development. When planting several plants, a distance between neighbors of 70 cm must be observed. The earth mixture should include three tiers:

  1. The very first 30 cm is filled with peat, rotted manure, and ash. 200 g of slaked lime is added to clay and loamy soil.
  2. Straw connected to the ground, rotted grass, leaves are poured into the middle tier.
  3. The upper tier is filled with a mass of sand with soil for clayey terrain. Sandy earth is combined with clay.

The rhizome grows well in loose soil, so the area needs to be loosened up. It is necessary to plant the plant so that above the upper buds the earth lies in a layer of 5-7 cm, for clay - 3 cm.

Transplanting a crop along with the land helps it to settle down better in a new area. When the root is divided, the plant needs careful maintenance.

Important: in the spring, check how the peonies are planted. If the buds have disappeared, they dig in the ground with the rhizome a little, and pour it down.

When to plant peonies?

Planting, transplanting, reproduction of plants is carried out in the autumn. The bushes will be able to get stronger and new roots will grow. The climatic zone affects the planting period. Planting of peonies begins towards the end of summer - in August, ends at the end of October. The main thing is to plant a month before the frost hits. During this period of time, the root system will grow.

On a note. Prepare the planting site 30 days before planting. The soil will have time to settle. If necessary, planting or transplanting peonies in springtime is possible, but after the snow melts. It is not recommended to separate the plant, it is wiser to transplant it with soil from the previous site.

Yellow peony care

The crop requires generous watering in the spring, during bud emergence and after they have faded. Watering the flower begins in April. A hole is dug around the culture for better water penetration. Watering ends at the end of summer. After flowering ends, watering is needed once a month.

Fertilize the plant three times during the season:

  1. When the snow melted. A depression is created along the diameter of the plant, a weak solution of potassium permanganate is poured in.
  2. When small sprouts rise. Peonies are fertilized for the second time with nitrogen and potassium compounds - rotted manure, salt, saltpeter.
  3. The last fertilization is done 2 weeks before flowering. Top dressing should consist of phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium elements.

Cut the flowers when the peonies have faded. The flower must be cut to the level of the first leaf. Other branches are not touched for a month. Kidneys are laid on them. When buds are formed, the stepchildren are cut off on one branch - this is necessary for the branching of the plant.

Peony bush after pruning

It is necessary to regularly cleanse the garden of grass weeds - they suck in the water needed by the crop.

Preparing bushes for wintering

In the first month of autumn, the varietal peony is completely cut off. After the first frost, they are covered with sawdust and dry peat. The thickness of the mulch layer is permissible from 5 to 15 cm. Then it is closed with a wooden box. You can use a plastic container. Dried branches are thrown over.

The flowers are easy to care for, the plants are not capricious, they are resistant to subzero temperatures. Subject to the principles of planting and good care, they will delight you with lush, bright flowers for decades.

Peonies are loved for their stunning vibrant flowers and abundant greenery. They transform the garden and summer cottage, look luxurious in a bouquet. If you prepare the land according to the rules and regularly care for them, then peonies can grow in one area up to 35 years.
