Onions are the most commonly used ingredient in a wide variety of culinary products. This vegetable crop has a large number of fans. The owners of summer cottages are trying to grow as much onion as possible, for making blanks from it in pickled, frozen or dried form for the winter, as well as for eating freshly harvested. However, sometimes when grown, onions begin to shoot. To solve this problem and save the harvest, you need to know why the onion goes to the arrow, and take a number of measures, which will be discussed in this material, how to grow onions without arrows.

Agrotechnics of growing onions

Home cultivation of an onion plant requires adherence to certain agricultural techniques, which includes a number of care measures.

Planting soil

For the normal development of onion planting, the level of soil oxidation must be neutral, the average pH is 6.5. Excessive acidification of the soil can occur if the bed receives a large amount of mineral fertilizers for a long time. In this case, before planting onion sets for 3 years, work is carried out to deoxidize the soil material by introducing one of the components:

  • slaked lime;
  • dolomite flour in the amount of 200 grams per m².

Why does the bow go to the arrow

It is not recommended to lime the soil just before starting sowing work. However, it is permissible to use 400 grams of wood ash per 1 m2.

Fresh organic matter will not work as a fertilizer for onions. However, if the land in which the onions will be grown is characterized by a depleted composition, then in the spring season 2 kilograms of mature humus is introduced per 1 m2 of the planting area. In autumn, during digging, a certain amount of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers is applied.

Another part of the fertilizer, to which part of the nitrogen is added, is applied next spring: before starting planting work. During digging, decomposed organic matter is added to the enriched chernozem. In peaty soil, nitrogenous fertilizer is not applied, but the volume of phosphorus is increased by 35%.

Nitrogen fertilizers are not applied

Temperature regime

Onions are representatives of garden crops that are distinguished by good resistance to low temperatures. Thus, sowing and planting operations are carried out in the early spring period, with an average air temperature of + 4 ° C.

Repetition of short-term spring frosts, which are characterized by an air temperature of -3 ° C, will not damage onion seedlings. However, at a lower air temperature, the adult bulb will stop growing and the seeds will not ripen.

Planting soil preparation

You can re-grow this plant on the same ridge after five years. In the autumn season, after the onion crop of the previous crop has been harvested, the soil should be cleaned of weeds, and then watering should be carried out, which will promote the germination of new weeds. After that, the earth must be dug deeply 30 centimeters.

Weed control

Before starting to dig, ripe humus or half a bucket of compost, a complete mineral complex consisting of a mixture of 30 grams of urea with granular phosphate and 20 grams of chlorine-free potassium, are introduced onto 1 m2 of depleted soil. In the spring, before planting the seedlings, 15 grams of nitroammofoska is applied when loosening.

Planting material

With the onset of autumn, the harvested crop must be dried and divided into two fractions, selecting bulbs, the diameter of which is two centimeters and oatmeal, less than one centimeter in size. For the southern regions, so that the bow does not shoot what to do, professional gardeners recommend planting wild oat on an open ridge in the winter period, for the northern regions - in a greenhouse. The planting turnip must be cleaned of dry scales and small plant inclusions, and dry and diseased bulbs must also be removed.

Helpful advice. In order for the crop to consist of bulbs of the same size, two weeks before spring planting, the seedlings are sorted into fractions.

Onions with a diameter of more than 3 centimeters should be planted separately - such planting material is usually aimed at obtaining onion feathers, due to its accelerated shooting, as well as the inability to form a bulb of normal quality.

The sorted planting material is warmed up for 7 hours at + 45 ° C temperature.

Note. Before planting the bulbs, they need to be processed: soak for half an hour in a 1% potassium permanganate solution.

Landing operations

In order not to have to look for a solution to the problem, why the bow goes to the arrow and what to do, many summer residents are interested in the question of how to plant a bow so that there are no arrows. You can start planting bulbs using one-line technology, observing a 5 cm spacing between plantings and 40 cm between rows. With multi-row belt sowing, a 20 cm row spacing is maintained.

The seating depth depends on the size of the planted onion. In dry weather conditions, it is necessary to prepare the soil by carrying out the correct pre-emergence watering so that the onions do not shoot.

The emergence of seedlings occurs after 10 days. Removal of weeds and soil crust should be carried out in a timely manner. To avoid deformation of the root system, loosen the soil using a surface method.

Note! You can not carry out hilling onion plantings.

Prevention of diseases and insect pests

Most often, onion plantings are exposed to fungal infections and a large number of pest varieties. The reason for the appearance of factors that negatively affect the plant is the disturbed cultivation technique.

Symptoms of onion diseases include a number of external deformations:

  • changing the color of the leaves;
  • the appearance of light points;
  • the presence of dashes;
  • withered feathers;
  • twisting the feather.

If one of the above symptoms appears on the plant, it is sprayed with a tank mixture of biofungicides with bioinsecticides, which pose no danger either to humans or animals. The use of chemical processing agents is not recommended, and when grown on feathers, it is prohibited.

Chemical processing is dangerous

How to harvest

The appearance of the leaves indicates the onset of the harvest time. A bulb is considered ripe if the leaves are down and turn yellow.

When dry, sunny weather sets in, the onion should be pulled out of the ground and left on the ridge or transferred under a hinged structure and dried for a week. Then sort through and cut off, leaving a 5-centimeter stump.

Reasons for shooting a bow

There is more than one reason why the onion plant begins to shoot:

  1. Incorrect storage of seed.The storage temperature of onions selected for planting should be 0 ° C - this will help to avoid shooting. Storage of seedlings in conditions of air temperature above zero will adversely affect the quality of the planting material. The seeds can be stored at any temperature. It should be remembered that it takes a year to germinate a turnip from seed. For the winter, it is better to place the set in a basement with high humidity so that it can germinate. The sprouted sevok, planted in the garden, will certainly start to shoot arrows, and so that the onion does not go into the arrow at all, they must be removed in a timely manner.
  2. The planting set is not of the right size. Before starting planting, it is necessary to sort the bulbs in accordance with the dimensions:

Sort the bulbs

  • sevok (up to 10 millimeters in diameter);
  • medium fraction material (about 20 millimeters in diameter);
  • large material (more than 30 centimeters in diameter).

Large-sized planting material should be excluded, since it will definitely begin to shoot. However, it is good to plant for early greens.

  1. The landing was made at the wrong time. It is possible to guarantee the prevention of shooting by planting the seedlings in warm ground - when planting, when the early calendar spring comes, the bulb can begin to shoot.

How to stop the shooting process

Shooting can be prevented by planting onions in the pre-winter season, especially in areas with warm winters. However, if winter in the region is characterized by a predominance of low temperatures, this crop is planted in a different way.

Planting onions before winter

Planting material is selected, consisting of small and medium-sized seedlings. Large onions should be set aside for growing in order to obtain onion feathers.

Helpful advice. Planting material purchased on the market must be warmed up for 20 days using a battery, near which a wooden pallet with a set is placed, so that the bow does not have arrows.

The purchased seeds must be soaked using a solution that must be made by yourself. This is a highly effective home remedy made from potassium permanganate, which will also help prevent arrows.

Folk methods from shooting bulbs

The most common folk method of processing onions from such a phenomenon as shooting is to remove the peduncle. Carrying out this procedure can have a positive effect on the size of the future harvest. The cutting area is at the base of the bulb. It should be noted that the arrow will grow again, so the peduncles will have to be removed as they germinate. The arrow and peduncle are correctly cut off - from the beam.

Note. It is possible to identify a shooted onion plant by a thickened base.

Varietal shallots, as a rule, are not subject to shooting. The selection of a particular hybrid variety is determined by the climate prevailing in the region where this vegetable grows.

Helpful advice. Onion arrows can be prepared canned or used as fertilizer.

For another method of getting rid of shooters, soda is used. In a liter of boiling water, a teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate is diluted until the powder is completely dissolved. This procedure usually takes half an hour. It is recommended to cover the container and wrap it in a warm towel for greater efficiency. Before soaking the sowing bulbs, the scales are removed from them. If the skin is completely removed, the seeds may not sprout.

Also, so that arrows do not form on the onion, you can plant it in the form of sprouted seedlings.

When the onion begins to go into the arrow, this is a fairly common problem when growing this crop. However, processing the planting material before planting so that the bow does not go into the arrow, and proper care will help to avoid or completely get rid of such a problem.
