Onions are one of the most common crops. It is used both in food and as a healing agent. It has been cultivated in Russia since the twelfth century. The onion contains a large amount of vitamins, phytoncides, mineral salts and many other minerals necessary for the human body. Thanks to this, the vegetable has become so popular all over the planet.

Onions can be grown for one, two, or even three years, depending on the purpose for which they are grown. In the first year, sowing seeds into the soil, the gardener receives an onion set or, as it is also called, an arbazheka. These bulbs are one to two centimeters in diameter, weighing two to five grams. In the second year, when planting onion sets, a large uterus bulb grows. And when in the third year you plant a large onion, you can get seeds as a result. Since they are black, they called them nigella.

The southern regions can receive seeds in the second year of onion cultivation. In the first year of sowing, a ready-made uterus bulb is obtained here. And in the second year, an arrow grows on it with a family inflorescence at the end, where the seeds are formed.

When growing onions, it is necessary to take into account the agrotechnical characteristics of this crop. It must be taken into account that the root system of the vegetable has a fibrous structure, which is why it needs additional nutrition. It is because of this that onions give high yields. It is best to plant onions in an area where crops grew, for which organic fertilizers were applied during soil preparation. These plants include:

  • early cabbage;
  • tomatoes;
  • cucumbers;
  • potatoes;
  • zucchini;
  • legumes.

Onions perfectly coexist with crops such as:

  • cabbage;
  • carrot;
  • beet;
  • radish.

Thanks to this, the compaction of the beds can be done.

You need to plant onions in soil that gives a neutral reaction to acidity. Therefore, too acidic soil must be deoxidized. To do this, use slaked lime, dolomite flour or wood ash. In no case should fresh organic fertilizers be given for this crop. The humus must be mature. In addition, when preparing the site for planting onions in the fall, mineral fertilizers are also applied.

Important.In the spring, just before planting, you also need to revitalize the soil. Only organic matter can be introduced on black soil. Peaty soil is fertilized with potash fertilizers.

Onions perfectly tolerate the cold and the last frosts, so they are planted as soon as the snow melts and the soil temperature reaches +12 degrees. During spring frosts, even at a temperature of -3 degrees, onion seedlings will not suffer. At the same time, adult plants at such a temperature, on the contrary, stop developing, and the seeds in this case do not ripen completely.

In order for the onion to grow and develop, you need a sufficient amount of moisture. If the seeds do not receive moisture, they will be small and puny. At the same time, a large bulb without water remains dry and tough.

Soaking onions before planting

Gardeners and gardeners every year try to learn more and more valuable information in order to increase yields. The simplest advice in most cases is very helpful in the care of crops. When growing onions, many do not think at all about how to increase yields, and why there are times when this plant does not grow at all.Experienced gardeners know that onions need to be prepared before planting, that is, soaked.

Onions on greens

Naturally, the question now arises, how to soak onion sets before planting, and how many ways are there? Consider the most basic ways to prepare planting material in order to improve seedlings, how to protect the plant from pests and how to do it.

It is worth noting the fact that it is not necessary to soak the onion planting material. Moreover, if it is planted at an industrial level. In addition, it is not necessary to process sevok when high-quality planting material is purchased. The main quality criterion is the cultivation of seedlings on healthy fertile soil.

Few people grow sevok at home, as it is easier to buy it on the market. Therefore, there are no guarantees of quality in this case. In this case, soaking the arbazheka will protect the gardener from troubles during harvesting, namely from diseases, rotting and pests.

Before soaking the onions before planting, each bulb should be slightly cut. Thus, the solution will penetrate between the scales and disinfect them from harmful microflora. But you cannot make the cut too large, since in this case the bulb will begin to rot and will not form turnips. Instead of cutting, you can simply peel the onions from the husks.

If the seed is too shallow, it will greatly complicate the soaking process. For this reason, when purchasing, you need to choose trusted suppliers and farmers who, when growing planting material, conscientiously adhere to all technologies. In this case, the sevok is collected in dry warm weather and stored in a clean, dry, ventilated room.

Important! If the seed is planted only on greens, then it is not necessary to process it before planting.

Pros and cons of soaking onions

Summer residents are still hotly debated about how effective this process is, and what to soak the onion before planting. But, whether to do it or not, each gardener must decide individually, having studied all the advantages and disadvantages of such a preparation of planting material.

Experiments have shown a number of advantages of soaking onions before planting by professional gardeners. These include:

  • greens and turnips grow and develop more actively;
  • the bulb gets rid of negative microflora, which contributes to active development;
  • onions do not rot;
  • the soil is not contaminated with bacteria that often live in the planting material.

If we consider the disadvantages of soaking, then in this case we can say with confidence that the reason in this case is insufficient soaking, but not in any way at the expense of solutions on the structure of the onion. In addition, incorrectly trimmed bulbs can also cause a negative process when growing a crop. Therefore, to avoid such troubles, before using any solution, you need to carefully study the instructions.

Soaking solutions

Depending on what kind of solution the gardener will use, he will achieve this goal. This will happen because each of the solutions is intended for the prevention of a specific disease, especially since each of the solutions has its own peculiarity.

Important! Before processing the planting material, it must be sorted and soft and rotting onions removed.

There are the following solutions for onion processing:

  • Saline solution. To prepare it, you will need two liters of water and two tablespoons of table salt;
  • Soda solution. To prepare it, you will need a bucket of water, the temperature of which does not exceed fifty degrees, and a teaspoon of soda;
  • Manganese solution. Take no more than 35 grams of potassium permanganate crystals per bucket of water;
  • Fitosporin. This medication can be purchased as a liquid, or as a paste and powder. It is necessary to use the drug, depending on how it is described in the instructions, although it acts in the same way;
  • Hydrogen peroxide. This drug is a combination of hydrogen and oxygen, due to which the agent is used both in medicine and in industry for redox actions;
  • Piperazine.

Potassium permanganate solution

For their preparation, the correct dosage is important, otherwise the process will not bring the desired effect.

Onion soaking process

In each of these solutions, soaking is done differently, and you cannot use them all together, with the exception of some options.

Soaking the onions before planting in a saline solution can be done using a solution of potassium permanganate. In this case, the first to be used is a saline solution. The onions are soaked for at least three hours. Thanks to such bathing, turnip growth is stimulated, and the plant will be protected from the aggression of the environment in the soil. Thus, the bulb will not be affected by nematodes and other diseases.

Important! Potassium permanganate can be used after saline solution or as an individual main means of protection.

In potassium permanganate, onions are infused for several hours, so that a large number of diseases that affect the bulbs can be prevented.

There are a lot of legends about the soda solution, one of which is that when processing onions with a soda bath, it will not shoot. The release of arrows with a bow depends only on how correctly the bulbous planting material was preserved. If it has been well dried and stored in appropriate conditions, then the arrow will not be. Otherwise, even baking soda won't help. And the use of soda when processing with hot water will prevent the development of some diseases on the bulbs.

In saline solution

By treating the onion with birch tar, you can get rid of not only diseases, but also pests. Moreover, the use of this agent has a beneficial effect on the human body. You need to process with tar as follows:

  • sevok is carefully dried throughout the day;
  • each onion must be opened, that is, remove the upper husk;
  • the top is slightly trimmed;
  • soaked in a tar solution for three to four hours.

To prepare the solution, you need to take a spoonful of tar per liter of water. In this case, the water must be heated to 22 degrees. The contents need to be stirred periodically, so the planting material is well saturated.

Important! When immersing the set in a bath, it is best to put it in a net and attach it with a brick, so that the bag does not float to the surface, and the onion has the opportunity to soak well.

Fitospirin is used only for the prevention of diseases, while it cannot prevent the invasion of insects on the onion plant. In addition, this drug will only help to resist certain diseases, such as:

  • powdery mildew;
  • downy mildew or downy mildew;
  • bacterial rot of onions;
  • phomosis.

It should be remembered that the use of the drug is recommended strictly according to the instructions. Each type of this drug has a separate dose. For spraying, a solution of phytospirin powder in a ratio of ten grams per half liter of water is suitable, and when soaking, twenty grams of this drug are taken. In this case, phytospirin is used after the onion has been soaked in a solution to stimulate growth.

Hydrogen peroxide acts as a disinfectant. Therefore, by treating the sevok with this drug, the gardener will disinfect the plant, increase its immunity, which will serve as a growth stimulator. Thus, a plant treated with this preparation will subsequently yield a good harvest. The onions are soaked in this solution for no more than five minutes.

Pay attention.Onions are often attacked by insects, in particular, the onion fly attacks this plant. Most gardeners use ammonia for this purpose. Others use different methods. In particular, Pipirizin tablets are used.Since this drug is used in medicine to remove worms from the human body, its use in the beds is completely harmless. The plant can be eaten immediately after processing. In order to process damaged onions, the tablets are diluted with water.

To completely get rid of this pest in the fall, when preparing the soil for planting onions, you need to dig deep into the area, since the fly hides in the ground to a depth of twenty centimeters.

It is important not only what to soak the onion sets before planting, but the care of the plant plays an important role in growing onions. It is necessary, first of all, to understand that the soaking of the onion set is done only in order to help it grow and develop. But it won't grow without fertilizers. For planting, you need to select high-quality bulbs, dry and warm them correctly. Moreover, if all the rules of planting and care are followed, then preparing the seed will help give the expected result, and the gardener will receive a large juicy onion without damage to his table.
