Onions are one of the most popular vegetable crops among gardeners; they can be found in almost every plot. This root vegetable is traditionally considered quite resistant to temperature fluctuations and is well stored. Despite this, sometimes the plant surprises and germinates before planting.

Reasons for early germination

The appearance of sprouts in onions is usually associated with the following reasons:

  • the arrival of spring heat, at which growth processes begin actively in the root crop;
  • dampness in the room;
  • ingress of water into the neck of the bulb.

All these factors awaken the bulb from hibernation and make it grow.

How to prevent germination

To prevent the germination of the bulbs, it is necessary to properly prepare the room in which they will be stored. The temperature should be room temperature, not higher than 23 degrees Celsius and not lower than 18. The air humidity should not exceed 70%. Good air circulation will prevent moisture from stagnating, therefore ventilation must be provided.

So that the root crop does not dry out, it can be sprinkled with onion peel, it will create the necessary protective layer.

The storage container must be breathable.

What to do if the onion still sprouts

It is very important to notice rotten seedlings, or moldy fruits in time. They need to be removed so that they do not damage healthy specimens.

Moldy onions cannot be planted, mold fungi will infect the soil first, and then the neighboring plants.

If the growth process has begun in the onion set, then it cannot be stopped, but there is an opportunity to get fresh greens. To do this, it is planted on the windowsill. The best way would be to grow in a plastic bottle with holes for onions around the perimeter. This method saves space on the windowsill and allows plants to receive water evenly from the soil.

Planting sprouted onions in containers

You can also plant the bow in flat containers. In this case, it is important that the roots fit tightly to each other, thereby forming a kind of lawn. The soil needs to be watered from time to time and made sure it does not become moldy.

If the seedlings are very small, then you can try to plant such a set. Before planting, it is important to properly prepare the fruit: dry it for about a week, sort it, warm it up near the battery for 8 to 10 hours, and at the end soak it in saline or potassium permanganate solution for 3 to 4 hours. Such preparation will greatly increase the chances of a good harvest.
