There is an opinion that this procedure is just a tribute to traditions, fashion, dating back to Soviet times, but in fact it is necessary. Whitewashing of trunks and lower branches of trees is carried out to protect plants from adverse environmental influences: temperature changes, harsh winds, hot sun and frost.

Why whitewash trees?

In bright sun, the dark bark of trees can heat up to 20-30 degrees, under the temperature it bursts, a "burn" crack is formed. This helps the pests to get deeper, as a result of which the trees become sick. The same effect is observed when exposed to negative temperatures.

In winter, the whitewashed bark does not attract rodents who are looking for something to profit from.

With whitewashing, the flowering process occurs later, which allows you to protect trees from spring frosts.

When is tree whitewashing most beneficial?

Experienced gardeners whitewash trees up to 3 times a year. The main whitewashing is carried out in the fall, starting from mid-October, early November. It must be carried out before the first frost begins. Repeated in spring and summer.

In the spring, the "renewing" procedure is best done in February or early March, when there is no frost and insects have not actively made their way up.

Summer treatment is carried out only if the applied composition is washed off under the influence of certain natural factors.

How to whiten?

There are many products for whitewashing: lime solutions, water-based and water-dispersion paints, slaked lime and other special solutions.

Lime mortars are the most popular natural mortars. Acrylic paint retains well, is light-repellent and is good at fighting pests. Slaked lime is suitable for young, not yet matured trees. She has the disadvantage of poor adhesion to the surface. Special solutions adhere well and cover the barrel. They are natural, and the copper sulfate included in the composition reliably protects against diseases and pests.

How to do it right?

In order for the garden to please with its harvest, it is necessary to take care of the bark.

The order of work: Cleansing the tree trunk from moss, old peeled bark and lichens. This procedure is carried out in damp weather conditions using hands wearing garden cloth gloves. Bark disinfection. Carried out in dry weather. Spraying the bark of trees is carried out using a 3-5% solution of copper sulfate or other preparations containing copper. Closing wounds with putties, garden pastes. You can prepare them yourself or purchase them in specialized stores. Whitewash. It should be carried out 2-3 times a year in dry weather. Trunks and lower branches of trees are whitened for about 1/3 of the length. It is necessary to process all trees: seedlings and old ones. The whitewash layer is 2-3 mm, a thicker layer may be harmful to the health of the tree.
